Regular Container
Line HELO 1 stops End of March 2012
The Container Line Services HELO1, which were
developed and operated by Helogistics Holding in Vienna, will stop its services between the Port of
Constanta and Budapest at the end of March 2012. This service was developed in 2010 as an innovative
transport concept for regular container traffic on the Danube but for economic reasons can no longer
be offered from this point in time onwards. Herfried Leitner, the CEO of Helogistics Holding, states
the main reason for the end of the service as the nautical problems on the Danube during the
previous months (low water levels made shipping operations almost impossible). It was also the
difficult nautical conditions, which made it hard to keep to the regular time plan. The price and
the operationally attractive aspect of the container line brought almost 10,000 TEUs onto the Danube
waterway and is clear evidence that the inland waterway transport on the Danube is suitable for the
transport of containers. HELO1 had an excellent start and held its own, »However our expectations
in terms of the transported containers were not met«, sums up Mr. Leitner. In order to be able to
operate a regular container line service, the support of the shipping company industry is also
needed to bring loaded containers to the HELO1 service. That support was unfortunately for the most
part missing. By the owners of Helogistics has therefore the decision been made that it will
concentrate on its core business in the future namely the transport of bulk products on the Danube.
In this area Helogistics and its subsidiaries will remain a competent and reliable transport partner
for the shipping industry on the Danube, Rheine and Main.
Future Containert transports only by prior arrangement Helogistics continues to
offer the shipping industry the handling of complete and partly loaded containers following prior
agreement. Should the framework requirements change for the better, then Helogistics is open to
start operating the container service regularly again. »We were convinced, that an innovative
transport solution such as HELO1 could continue to operate on a long term basis, because it was the
shipping industry, which encouraged us in the past, to start a regular container service on the
Danube«, adds Mr. Leitner. All the more Helogistics Holding regrets the discontinuation of the
service, because the support of the shippers was not to the extent, which had been expected.
Helogistics continues to offer the shipping industry the handling of complete and part loading of
containers following prior agreement.
